DO OUR KIDS REALLY NEED EXERCISE?
With the increase consumption of high-calorie snacks, portion size during meals, increase usage of technology and decrease in physical activity, it is no doubt that our children are prone to weight gain that is leading them to adulthood obesity. Obesity is a health condition that can lead to noncommunicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age. Recent studies have shown an increase of nearly fifty percent in overweight children.
According to World Health Organisation, in 2015, the number of overweight children under the age of five, is estimated to be over forty-two million. Almost half of all overweight children under five lived in Asia and one-quarter lived in Africa. With this statistic in mind, we should recognise the signs and take immediate action in lifestyle changes.
FIT KIDS = BETTER MIND BETTER BODY
Overweight children are often mocked and ostracised by their peers for being unable to participate in sports and games, hence feel depressed. Fitness does not only change the outlook of our body but emotional and psychological as well.
When children are involved in organised sports, they:
- Experience release of endorphins which will trigger a positive feeling in the body
- Develop a sense of camaraderie
- Teamwork and bonding with their peers
- Gain positive values carried throughout their life
- Better behaviour and performance in academics
REDUCE SEDENTARY TIME
It simply means
- Reduce “screen time”
- Increase active time
- Introduce new hobbies
- Integrate social classes
- Implement healthy eating
- Include outdoor games and activities
